Get a wallet

A wallet lets you store Bitcoins and send/receive payments. There are many wallets to choose from and here are our recommendations:

Web Wallets - Web wallets are the easiest & most convenient to use, but are potentially less secure than wallet software run on your own computer.

Blockchain (Recommended)
Coinbase
Coinjar
Coinpunk

Software Wallets - Software wallets are downloaded and run from your computer. They're considered more secure because the user has more control and doesn't depend on a 3rd party service. Most software wallets require nearly a full day constructing a local copy of the blockchain before use.

BitcoinQT - The original Satoshi wallet from bitcoin.org
Armory - (Recommended) Armory is the most mature full featured wallet.
Multibit - This is the easiest to use because it doesn't require a full download of the blockchain.

Mobile Phone Wallets - iphone & Android apps are available.
Blockchain (Recommended)
CoinJar
Coinpunk (Use as a web application on iphone & Android)

Hardware Wallets - Hardware wallets are the most secure because they don't expose your private keys to the network.
Trezor - (not yet available, coming soon)
BitSafe - (not yet available, coming soon)

BitSafe has an established reserve of Bitcoin from thousands of sources. When you use BitSafe to mix your Bitcoins, you will receive Bitcoins that originate from lots and lots of different transactions and wallet addresses, making it almost impossible for someone to track your wallet activity.

BitcoinWallet.com was founded by Price Givens and Alex Charfen with the vision of making bitcoin easier to use.

What's in your wallet?: with no banks and no cash or debit cards, managing bitcoins is a personal affair.
- An array of client software and wallets allow users to manage their money and their transactions securely and easily. [9]

- A bitcoin is divisible by up to 100 million satoshis (smallest units). Why 100 million? Unlike inflation, which causes the dollar (let alone the penny) to lose value, the growth of the bitcoin in value will eventually cause even 1/100 millionth of a bitcoin to have worth.

- 21 million: as defined by bitcoin rules, there will never be more than 21 million BTC in circulation with new mining ceasing by the year 2140. [8]

- Bitcoins are mined regularly and distributed among participating miners. They are then exchanged, bought, and sold like commodities through a mercantile system that spans the globe.

Buying BTC

3. Buy with bitcoins

There's an increasing amount of businesses and individuals accepting bitcoins the same way they do with dollars or euros.

Bitcoins are limited in amount and it is traded around the clock, 24/7, 365 days a year. The Bitcoin Robot is analyzing the prices in all Bitcoin exchange marketplaces in real time, exploiting the gaps and using hedging techniques to take advantage of almost bulletproof profit opportunities.

Purchasing Bitcoins - Although it's not yet easy to buy bitcoins, it's getting simpler every day. Here are our recommendations:

LocalBitcoins.com - This fantastic service allows you to search for people in your community willing to sell bitcoins to you directly.
How To Buy Bitcoins - An international directory of bitcoin exchanges.
Cash Into Coins - Recommended for fast, simple service.
Coinbase - Bitcoin exchange based in the United States. (Highly rated).
BitStamp - A multi currency bitcoin exchange based in Slovenia. (Highly rated).
CoinJar - CoinJar allows direct bitcoin purchases on their site. They're based in Australia but serve an international clientele.

What are features off bitcoin?

Bitcoin has several important features that set it apart from normal fiat currencies.

1. It’s decentralized

The bitcoin network isn’t controlled by one central authority. Every machine that mines bitcoin and processes transactions makes up a part of the network, and the machines work together. That means that, in theory, one central authority can’t tinker with monetary policy and cause a meltdown – or simply decide to take people’s bitcoins away from them, as the Central European Bank decided to do in Cyprus in early 2013. And if some part of the network goes offline for some reason, the money keeps on flowing.

2. It’s easy to set up
Conventional banks make you jump through hoops simply to open a bank account. Setting up merchant accounts for payment is another Kafkaesque task, beset by bureaucracy. However, you can set up a bitcoin address in seconds, no questions asked, and with no fees payable.

3. It’s anonymous
Well, kind of. Users can hold multiple bitcoin addresses, and they aren’t linked to names, addresses, or other personally identifying information. However…

4. It’s completely transparent
…bitcoin stores details of every single transaction that ever happened in the network in a huge version of a general ledger, called the block chain. The block chain tells all. If you have a publicly used bitcoin address, anyone can tell how many bitcoins are stored at that address. They just don’t know that it’s yours. There are measures that people can take to make their activities more opaque on the bitcoin network, though, such as not using the same bitcoin addresses consistently, and not transferring lots of bitcoin to a single address.

5. Transaction fees are miniscule
Your bank may charge you a £10 fee for international transfers. Bitcoin doesn’t.

6. It’s fast
You can send money anywhere and it will arrive minutes later, as soon as the bitcoin network processes the payment.

7. It’s non-repudiable

When your bitcoins are sent, there’s no getting them back, unless the recipient returns them to you. They’re gone forever.

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren’t printed, like dollars or euros – they’re produced by lots of people running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems. It’s the first example of a growing category of money known as cryptocurrency. Value of the Bitcoin

What is it based on?

Every currency has two things in common:
Something of real value (like gold or silver) to stand behind the coins and notes,
Have a centralized government to control it.

Conventional currency has been based on gold or silver. Theoretically, you knew that if you handed over a dollar at the bank, you could get some gold back (although this didn’t actually work in practice). But bitcoin isn’t based on gold; it’s based on mathematics.

For decades, throngs of internet insiders have worked to establish a digital currency of its own, but the big problematic question has always been twofold:
- What will back the currency?
- Who will control the system?

Bitcoin is the first currency of its kind to show true potential to become much more than just an Internet sensation (which it definitely is).

Around the world, people are using software programs that follow a mathematical formula to produce bitcoins. The mathematical formula is freely available, so that anyone can check it. The software is also open source, meaning that anyone can look at it to make sure that it does what it is supposed to.

Bitcoin is developing into a major player in the world economy at large. Here are some of the facts and figures that show how bitcoins (BTC) will give dollars and yen a run for their money.

The essence of bitcoin
- A bitcoin is a basic unit of currency, mined not from gold or silver but instead from code.

- Free of all governmental oversight, the bitcoin economy is monitored by a peer-to-peer internet protocol.

- All bitcoin generation (or mining) and every single bitcoin transaction is tracked by the P2P network.

- In short, a bitcoin is an encrypted string of data, or a hash, encoded to signify one unit of currency.

- With a code of 33 or more characters, it is virtually impossible to randomly reproduce.

- A bitcoin is also extremely expensive to track and verify

- The vast P2P server network checks every string of code for uniqueness by bruteforce comparison to ensure no coin is reproduced or double spent.

- It is this digital capital, the huge computer investment rather than gold or silver, that gives the bitcoin its value.
